Tilak Ka Parichay
The tilak on saints’ forehead is necessary as lets people to identify his sect. These tilaks on the foreheads of saints from different akharas, communities, and sects are an attraction for the pilgrims.
The Sadhus have different beliefs regarding the markings on their bodies. There are three types of communities, which use sandalwood, gopi chandan and roli as tilak. The Saints from the Vaishnav sect wear udharvapund, Shaiv sect wears tripund and Shakti sect wears roli.
According to Mahant Shri Nritya Gopal Das Ji Maharaj, the tilak and the hair exhibit Indian culture and these are ornaments for men. Vaishnav sect Brahmachari Bapoli said the tilaks help the sadhus to rise above conscious, dreamy and semi-conscious stage. These become a mean to attain God.
Explaining the physical importance of tilak, he said that in the present scenario man indulges in worthless thoughts. A kind of energy emerges on his forehead and the tilak enables the sadhus to control it.
Shaiv and Vaishnav sect sadhus claim that the tripundu and udharpundu exhibit their Gods – Lord Shri Ram and Lord Shiv.
The Shakt Sect wears roli or black tilak. They call it as a shining point. Delhi’s Kapalik Mahakaal Bhairav Nath Saraswati said that according to Indian culture, for a woman, her suhag is of foremost importance. She wears a red roli. Similarly, the roli worn in the form of straight lines shows that the wearer would not be unlucky. It shows that God is one.
